Coach Royal’s Eyes of Texas

The Kyle Family has had the great blessing of being friends with Coach Darrell Royal for decades, beginning in the early 70’s when Coach arranged for Mary Margaret to sing with legendary country recording artist Charlie Rich.  Our friendship continued through the years and we participated in many fund raisers and functions to which Coach Royal so willingly gave much of his time.  In later years, we would go to the Querencia and privately sing for him or perform for all the residents.  On one particular occasion, Coach Royal started reciting the words to familiar songs and hymns, and we would softly hum with him.  And then it happened. He began with “The eyes of Texas are upon you…”, and we naturally began with our backup, continuing to the end. When he finished we could not contain our excitement, and Coach loved it as well!  So, on October 12, 2012, we went into a recording studio where we, under the direction of Bodie’s son, Chad Hudson, were able to record Coach Royal reciting “The Eyes of Texas” while we sang back up for him. What an experience!  You can hear the love he felt for The University of Texas in his voice.  Little did we know that this would be the last time we would see him.  Sadly, Coach’s health quickly declined and he passed away on November 7, 2012.

We are pleased to share with you Coach Royal’s rendition of “The Eyes of Texas”.  A portion of the proceeds will benefit Darrell K. Royal Research Fund for Alzheimer’s Disease.
